BetNow Supports the Elimination of the Onside Kick in Professional Football

BetNow, an online sportsbook, supports a proposed NFL initiative to eliminate the onside kick. Instead, if teams want to get the ball back after a kickoff, they would have the option to “go for it” on a fourth and 15 play from their own 25-yard line.

Typically, NFL teams will attempt an onside kick once they have scored and are down in the fourth quarter of the game and the coaches fear that they will not receive the ball again. Last year in the NFL, a team successfully fielded their own onside kick 7.5% of the time. The rest of the time, the other team will gain possession of the ball.

With this proposal, any team would have the option to attempt to gain 15 yards in one play. If they successfully do so, then they can maintain possession of the ball. If they fail, then the other team would get the ball from where the play was ruled down.

“We’re all for actions that spice up the game. The NFL is truly America’s pastime, but there are ways to make it more accessible to fans. Allowing players to celebrate was a big step forward, as was the ability to attempt a two-point conversion after a touchdown before that. We feel that allowing teams to attempt a fourth and fifteen play will only improve the game. Instead of allowing a team to get a big lead then sit on it, or to deflate the ball, so to speak, by running it over and over, teams will always have a chance with this play. Besides, it could ultimately be better for player safety, as it could eliminate one more kickoff. We support this decision and hope that the NFL continues to do even more to improve this great game,” said Jose Ramos, marketing manager of BetNow.
